The Panamanian Hotel Association (APATEL) contacted me to make a campaign in the framework of the celebration of the 500 years of Panama City . This city, which is now known as “Panama Viejo”, was founded in 1519 by Pedrarias Dávila. Its original name was Our Lady of the Assumption of Panama. The word Panama comes from the indigenous cave and means abundance of fish and butterflies. The Spaniards “discovered the southern sea or Pacific Ocean” in Panama. Therefore, they established their first European settlement in this place. Since 2003, Panama Viejo and Casco Viejo share a UNESCO World Heritage designation.
To celebrate the founding anniversary, it was decided to grant the fifth night free in 54 hotels. The campaign focused on six destinations nationwide: Panama City, Chiriquí, Azuero, Bocas del Toro, Playas del Pacífico and El Valle de Antón. All APATEL hotels were invited to participate at no cost to them. A suggested five-day itinerary was made at each destination.
This campaign was supported by Avianca and Copa Airlines, which included it on their websites. Albrook Mall, the largest in Central America, provided discount coupons for travelers. Canal Bay & Tours also offered a special rate to transit the Panama Canal . The Ministry of Culture of Panama and the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) supported this campaign.
